Can you highlight your hair after you've colored it?

I have med brown hair and colored it with loreal creme coloring using an ash blond color to get rid of greys and to lighten it. The result is a lighter brown color, I like it ok, but also want blond highlights, how long should I wait to do it and is it ok to do. I would probably have that done professionally.
